Thailand!! The beaches, the temples, the food, the people, everything about this place is magical. I spent a month in Chiang Mai, and some time in Krabi, Phuket, and various Thailand Islands. I would also recommend Bangkok, Chiang Rai, and Pai. Click on the photos below for more in-depth recommendations on the areas I’ve been.
MONEY
The currency here is the Thai Baht (THB).
You are not expected to tip in Thailand, but some places will include a service charge.
In the bigger cities, credit cards are accepted at most places, but overall it is a very cash-based country.
ATMs are easy to find, but many will charge high withdrawal fees.
The approximate currency exchange is 1 USD = 31 THB.
In markets, expect to haggle. I usually offer half the price and settle somewhere in the middle.
CONNECTIVITY
In Thailand, most cafes and restaurants have free wifi, and co-working spaces are generally easy to find. Don’t expect great connectivity in the more remote towns and areas.
If you plan to get a local SIM card, I recommend using AIS. You should be able to find these at the airport, in malls, or around town.
LANGUAGE
Thai
Hello = Women say, sah-wat-dee-kah, men say, sah-wat-dee-krub
Thank you = Women say, kob-khun-kah, men say, kob-khun-krub
Goodbye = Laa-Gon
Yes = Chai
No = Mai
Wai is a gesture of paying respect (put your palms together at chest level and bow slightly). Do it when you say “Hello,” “Thank You,” and “I’m sorry.”
DRINKING WATER
Stick to filtered water, it isn’t safe to drink from the tap.
