Hanoi is one of the most different places I have ever traveled to. Embrace it! The city is beautiful with lakes all around, cozy coffee shops everywhere, and so much organized chaos. There are more motor bikes than cars, and crossing the street is like playing a game of Frogger. Every morning around 6am, the sidewalks are filled with people selling fruit, gutting fish, eating breakfast, giving haircuts... you name it. And there is a train that goes right through the middle of the city. Seriously, if you lean too far out of your front door on Train Street, you could easily get hit when a train is coming through.
WHEN TO VISIT
There are two main seasons in Hanoi: Rainy (May-September) and Dry (October-April).
Spring: February-April, this is one of the best times to visit, temps are usually between 59°-68° F.
Summer: May-August, it tends to average around 90° F in the summer and gets pretty rainy.
Fall: September-November, also a great time to visit, and tends to be the most beautiful. Temps are usually average 77° F.
Winter: December to January, it gets a little more chilly this time of year, usually between 50°-63° F.
GETTING AROUND
Walking: this is the best way to explore the Old Quarter. There is so much to see and lots of great shops and restaurants to stumble upon.
Uber/Grab: Getting around is really easy and affordable with Uber and Grab (the Asian version of Uber). Try an Uber Moto if you get a chance. They’re quicker than driving and much more fun.
WHERE TO STAY
The Old Quarter is the center of Hanoi and home to tons of great restaurants and nightlife. Most historical sites can be found here or a short ride away. Try and find accommodations near Hoan Kiem Lake as it tends to be the most central area. There are plenty of hotels and Airbnbs for very reasonable prices.
