Hanoi: Where to Go

Hanoi is a great city to walk around and explore. There is so much to see. Here are my top recommendations for spots to check out, but make sure to spend some time wandering aimlessly as well.

WHERE TO GO

  • Bach Ma Temple: Oldest temple in the city.

  • Dông Xuân Market: The largest covered market in Hanoi.

  • Hanoi Opera House: Grab an ice cream and hang out on the steps.

  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: The body of Ho Chi Minh is kept here.

  • Hoa Lò Prison Museum: This is where they kept the US prisoners of war.

  • Hoàn Kiêm Lake: This is in the center of the city and there is always so much going on. Kids playing, live music, you name it.

  • Long Biên Bridge: Check it out at sunset (or sunrise). Vendors will offer bamboo mats, snacks, and drinks here after sunset as well

  • Lotte Tower: Second tallest building in Hanoi and great view of the city.

  • One Pillar Pagoda: Built of wood on a single stone pillar designed to represent a lotus.

  • Quang Bá Flower Market: It’s open 24 hours but most active between 2am-4am when locals are buying flowers to sell.

  • Temple of Literature: Traditional Vietnamese architecture.

  • Thanh Niên Street: This is a cool spot to check out around sunset. The bridge here is a great spot for photos.

  • Train Street: The train goes right through the middle of the city, it’s very cool to check out. Usually passes through first thing in the morning and around 7pm.

  • Trân Quôc Pagoda: One of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam.

  • Vietnamese Women’s Museum: Really interesting museum about women in Vietnamese culture.

  • Weekend Night Market: Every Friday-Sunday after 7pm. It starts on Hang Dao Street and runs north to the edge of the Dong Xuan Market.

  • West Lake: The largest lake in Hanoi, lots of bars and restaurants are in this area.

  • You’ll notice a lot of streets are specific to one thing. Walk around and explore them! There’s a Christmas street, bamboo street, etc. All really cool to walk around.
